Living

A structural column stood where the entrance had to meet the living room. Rather than box it in, it was taken inside a screen of vertical and horizontal walnut slats, designed and made to measure, which divides the two semi-transparently.

The apartment does not open onto its view. It opens onto a panelled hall with a bench and a sculpture, and holds the city back until you turn the corner.

The GuestHouse has two places to gather: the large living and dining room on the ground floor, and a family TV room in the semi-basement.

In this apartment near Florence's Ponte Vecchio, the open space embodies Deniz Onel's sculptural sensibility, shaped to Douglas and Matthew's refined vision.

The dining table sits between the living room and the kitchen without a wall between any of them, under a cluster of mirrored globes.

The ground floor is one room under the old beams: the kitchen at one end, a long oak table for eight in the middle, a round table at the foot of the stair. Between them stands a divider of oak shelves carried on terracotta blocks.

Throughout the apartment I designed the lighting, technical and decorative.

The ground floor runs in a line: entrance hall, sitting room, dining room, each opening into the next through a stone arch. The hall was left to do its own work — a long run of terracotta, a console, a bench, the light falling in at both ends — and the rooms either side were furnished to be lived in rather than looked at.

A restyling of a room that started out entirely white. The floor was coated in epoxy resin in a blue that recalls the sea, set against the tones of the Fornasetti wallpaper.

The table sits against a wall of blackened steel and glass that runs the length of the room. From one chair you see the Uffizi arcade, the Arno at Ponte Vecchio, Palazzo Vecchio and the Duomo, without moving.

Under the roof, the upstairs living room looks through steel windows onto the valley and the lawn with its fire circle, with a stove at one end.

Technical lighting for two artworks in the entrance lounge beside the large open-space living room. The sculpture is lit by two track-mounted projectors.
